Laser treatment for spider veins
Laser treatment for spider veins
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are dilated blood vessels and veins that run close to the surface of the skin. They are more common on the legs of women than in men. They are red and blue in color. Spider veins often appear more frequently after a first pregnancy. Their development is due to a predisposition of connective tissue and venous valves. Consumption of vasodilating substances (alcohol), hot baths, and sauna visits can accelerate the formation of spider veins.
Treatment with blood vessel lasers
Spider veins are treated with lasers specifically designed for blood vessels. During this treatment, the dilated blood vessels, or rather their inner walls, are heated with laser light through the intact skin. The body then eliminates the damaged blood vessels within a few weeks. Usually, only a few treatments are necessary to achieve a satisfactory result.
The conversion of energy from the laser pulses causes a slight stinging or burning sensation. Some patients may find the treatment of thicker vessels painful. However, treatment of spider veins without local anesthesia is generally accepted.
Preliminary examination / Pre-treatment
Before laser treatment for spider veins, we will examine you using duplex ultrasound. This determines whether laser therapy is suitable for the skin areas to be treated.
Duration of treatment
Depending on the size of the skin area to be treated, the actual laser treatment can take up to 30 minutes. Larger areas require treatment in several sessions.
Possible side effects
Occasionally, pigmentation irregularities may occur, which usually disappear after a few weeks. Tanned skin may lose pigmentation and lighten in the treated areas. Intense sunbathing or visits to tanning salons can lead to excessive tanning of the treated areas. Therefore, these should be avoided initially. Sunscreen with a high sun protection factor is recommended.
After treatment
Ideally, the blood vessels should be completely closed or at least narrowed after the laser treatment. To avoid compromising the treatment's success, you should avoid hot showers, saunas, and similar activities in the days following the procedure.
