Dutasteride for hereditary hair loss
Enhancing Hair Growth with Dutasteride
Dutasteride inhibits the enzyme 5α-reductase. This occurs in various organs of the human body. Its function is to convert the sex hormone testosterone into the more biologically active form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). On the scalp, DHT promotes the loss of hair in the case of hereditary hair loss. Dutasteride stops this process and thus prevents a thinning of the scalp hair.
Dutasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor of the newer generation and has a better effect than the already known finasteride, the systemic side effects of dutasteride are lower because it is injected directly into the scalp and is not taken systemically in tablet form.
Various studies show that the therapy of Dutasteride improves the number, length and growth of hair. is.
In Germany, dutasteride has not yet been approved for this indication due to the lack of comprehensive studies and can therefore only be prescribed by doctors in Germany for off-label use. In some European countries, dutasteride is already approved for the treatment of hereditary hair loss.
Dutasteride is injected manually into the scalp in numerous injections spaced 4-5 mm apart after a local anesthetic by the doctor to a depth of approx. 1-1,5 mm. After the treatment, there may be a feeling of pressure on the scalp and headaches.
